This group is not for the child diagnosed with autism. This is a special program designed specifically to provide support for the siblings.
The interaction between siblings can affect the way a sibling forms family relationships, peer relationships, and his or her own self-concept. The research about typical siblings documented that they have many concerns, such as a need for information about the diagnosis, increased feelings of isolation, guilt, anger, resentment, and depression.
This program was created based on the social-emotional needs of the children participating. The Group setting offers a place where children can explore their feelings, be part of a group of peers that they can identify with, an opportunity to learn from and with each other, and be educated on their sibling’s diagnosis. |
